My ex went through a three month siege of postpartum dep. It was horrible! She cycled through bouts of extreme anxiety and ever deepening depression. She eventually self-committed at request of local police authorities after trying to kill herself and our baby several times. Lost control of our daughter to the county authorities for about a year. Needless to say I pursued all sorts of help family and otherwise, along the way, from birth on, but its difficult when you are dealing with a person who has become extremely non-rational. I became convinced that most of the supposed authorities (Doctors, psychoanalysts, and the like) really have very little practical experience in dealing with PPD. Mothers in this state have to be watched by the minute, 24 hours a day. A father can find himself doing an awful lot of mothering in this sort of situation. These types of post-birth event are rare, and fortunately in our case it passed with only moderate long term ill effects. It could have been far worse. No one who has not experienced this first hand can fully appreciate the gravity and delicacy of such a situation. Lifescarring comes to mind.
