I think there is some truth that Republicans are somewhat polarized on the abortion issue. I am mixed emotions on first trimester but am very much against partial birth and now the live birth abortion. I do not agree that we have to worry about religious leaders becoming great powers in politics. I do agree they will vote pretty much as a block relating to the abortion issue. However, that block is no more powerful or effective than the black vote, the jewish vote, the union vote, etc.. They have an impact but not a front row seat as far as controlling governmental issues.
Freedoms the Democrats take away are the freedoms to build an estate, (the estate tax is absolutely confiscatory) when they take 55% of an estate and then there are state estate taxes in addition. And, this tax is on money that has already been taxed once. The Democrats are very divisive in that they play race groups, socioeconomic groups against each other. They, in my opinion, unfairly tax nearly anyone who is working (marriage tax) and love programs of redistribution. I think we should have a safety net for those truly in need but then tax everyone fairly. Frankly, I would love a consumption tax and/or a flat tax and make it simple. And, with that tax I would want to insure that people earning under the poverty line would pay no taxes.
Over the years, the democrats in congress have given so many loopholes in the tax system that it is around 10000 pages and much too complicated. They carve out exceptions for favored people or groups if these groups or people are in favor with them. Maybe because they are big contributors. I want it simplified and then I would feel good about paying. Right now I will admit there is no way I could do my own taxes. I have to hire CPA's because my return is far too complicated. That is unreasonable because I am a reasonably intelligent person but cannot possibly be up to speed on all the intricacies of the tax law. Unfair and unreasonable. I, too, want us to be one big family regardless of race, creed or religion. I don't think we will ever get there unless we establish a consistent fairness in our system. And, again that includes helping those in need but not those who make a career of living off the government without any effort to work. We finally got workfare here in Fl. and it has made a big difference. At one of my clubs we had a speaker who works with those on welfare and she said the difference is night and day about their motivation to get a job. Before, unless they could make around 17000. per year there was zero incentive to work because the benefits they get from government are approximately that amount. So, that's where I stand. Hopefully, in the end we will all be together with a better, simpler and fairer government.
