Frank: The key question is not whether we need a strong military; we do. Both candidates agree on that. Over the past half-century we have spent $7.1 trillion (source: Gore Vidal in C-Span) on guns, bombs and bullets. Russia has just dramatically slashed its military budget. Outside of Iraq, Libya, perhaps a couple other so-called minor countries, all is quiet on the world front. Increasing the defense budget in a time of relative global stability makes no sense to me. None. The Cold War is over. The good guys won. Perhaps we should have hired a PR firm when the Berlin Wall came down.
