BALTIMORE, Sep 25, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- After a nationwide survey of more than 2,500 franchisors and related professionals, Success Magazine has named Sylvan Learning Center the nation's number one franchise in its October issue.
The Success list - taken from a survey sample furnished by the International Franchise Association - ranks the top 200 franchise operations in the United States. To rise to the top of the list, Sylvan stood out over every other franchise-based businesses, including McDonald's, Mail Boxes, Etc. and Thrifty Car Rental.
Four major factors were weighed in the survey - Financial Performance, Corporate Management, Growth and Stability, Franchisor/Franchisee Relationship and Opportunities for Growth. With over 800 Sylvan Learning Centers which generated revenues of $270 million in 1999, Sylvan has expanded its territory from the United States, Canada, Guam and Hong Kong to include Spain, Germany, Austria, Italy, the United Kingdom and France.
"We have a great relationship with our franchisees," stated Doug Becker, chairman and CEO of Sylvan Learning Systems. "We know that we couldn't have survived without their support. They count on us to provide leadership and we count on them to be our partners in building a successful business."
Indeed, the magazine points out that Sylvan's relationship with franchisees was designed for success. Potential franchisees go through a careful screening process to ensure that franchisor and franchisee are as close to perfect as matches come.
"We've always felt like partners in the truest sense of the word," according to Maggie Crawford a franchise owner and president of the Sylvan Franchise Owners Association. "We support each other and work together in a way that I suspect is rare - if not unique - in the franchising world."
The Success recognition marks the second consecutive year in which Sylvan has won praise for outstanding franchise operations from its peers. In 1999, Sylvan was named Franchisor of the Year by the American Association of Franchisees and Dealers.
"It's great to work in a business where you get notes from parents and children telling you that you changed their lives," stated Peter Cohen, president and COO of Sylvan Learning Systems and president of Sylvan Learning Centers. "Our franchisees maintain a high level of quality, and we have a management team focused on marketing and delivering a great educational service," Cohen adds.
"Sylvan is truly an exemplary company and should be very proud of this honor. Over 4000 companies had the potential of being included in the Franchise Gold 200. We salute and congratulate Sylvan," stated Victoria Conte, president and publisher of Success Magazine.
