how doya make an umlaut?

On the off chance that DownSouth's suggestion wasn't useful, here's my method. Since I type most of my messages first in Word, I use the two methods there:

1. From the pull-down menu at the top select "Insert," then "Symbol." A screen of symbols appears -- including the entire German alphabet -- and you click on the symbol you want. Then select "insert" from that page and the symbol goes into your document.

2. That page also tells you the "keyboard shortcut," I believe it's called, for many of the symbols. For the ä in Holländer, it's Ctrl + : + a. That's control key, colon, the letter a.

These keyboard shortcuts work in other programs, but not here on the message boards. So typing directly into the SI post window requires keeping Word at the ready to be able to go there, create the symbol, highlight and copy it, then return here and insert it.

Aber wenn es sich um ein Wort handelt, und Word nicht gleich zuhande ist, dann ist es viel einfacher lediglich "Hollaender" zu schreiben.
