I don't recall if he publicly admitted it (this is going back to 1982), but I do remember that a doctoral candidate at a California university did his thesis on the whole Castenada thing, came to the conclusion that it was all a work of fiction.

Almost as disillusioning as when Alan Watts killed himself.
