I don't know if I can go by some guys thesis on this. I remember there were strong passions on both sides at the time and Castenada wasn't talking. If it is fiction, it's up there with the best fiction ever written. It had a very strong influence on me as well. It's interesting to consider however that if Carlos did experience this, allowing the public to dismiss it as fiction after all the hoopala it generated would be the perfect path back to serenity.

But we digress. I can't really discuss Ayn Rand since I haven't read her, but my wife and son are currently reading Atlas Shrugged which is why this thread caught my attention.
