I guess it depends on what one is familiar with. Propane is almost as volatile as NG, yet lots of us routinely take tanks of propane home in the car trunk to run our grills, and compressed propane delivery trucks carrying tanks or cylinders drive down the highways.

A heavy steel tank located well within the frame of an automobile could be dented or even partly crushed without rupturing. I am amazed that gasoline tanks hold up as well as they seem to in many collisions.

Carbureted gasoline engines convert fairly easily to gas. I don't know about fuel injector systems.
