Both methanol and gasoline are poisonous if ingested, so I assume you're comparing passive inhalation. Long term effect of exposure to gasoline inhalation results in peripheral neuropathy and dementia, and methanol causes blindness and probably dementia as well (this is a guess).

Methanol is actually made by the body in small amounts (both as a breakdown product of aspartame and from the digestion of fruits/vegetables). Just like gasoline it can be toxic if inhaled, but you'd have to be hitting the methanol bong pretty damn hard - the toxic dose is about 100x the exposure you'd get by puming like gasoline.

We're not on the same page about the corrosion - I was thinking about a methanol powered fuel cell. Obviously such a car wouldn't have the usual gaskets and seals, and if they did it would be made to hold methanol.

Cheers,

Josh.
