The Vancouver Sun reports on the front page of its Tuesday edition that bacteria do not have a chance when they run into one of Bob Hancock's killers, which could prove to be the first new class of antibiotics developed in 30 years.

Reporter Margaret Munro says they latch on to the bacteria and quickly pry open holes in the microbes' outer membranes. University of BC microbiologist Mr Hancock says that then their guts leak out. He sees a big future for the little killers known as cationic peptides. The potent molecules promise much-needed relief from bacteria that are growing more resistant to conventional antibiotics. Mr Hancock, whose team has figured out how to mass produce peptides, which are found in minuscule amounts in almost all living things, from flies to humans, says it is really quite exciting. UBC has licensed the team's technologies to the local firm Micrologix Biotech, which is busy creating ever more potent varieties.
