This is a good point. The dual channel SDRAM systems that do exist are all very high end machines. Similarly, the i840 is a very high end machine, and the dual channel DDR SDRAM systems will also be very high end machines. No way that dual channel RIMM or DIMM systems will ever hit the mainstream PC market. How much is an i840 motherboard these days, anyway?

But it is also the case that technology marches on. Nvidia is selling a lot of graphics chips with x128 memory interfaces. Of course they are point to point, but that means that they also get to run at much higher bandwidths than the systems that use memory that consumers get to plug in.
