I worked very hard for a third party, the Libertarian party, a few years ago. It's a freaking, no, there's another word but I'll get bumped for using it, a f***ing uphill battle that a third party candidate has to fight just to get on the ballot. You need a petition and a voting drive to get enough signatures and they have to be the right kind of signatures, just to be on the ballot. Our goal then (elections of 1980 and 1984) was to get the candidate on the ballot of all 50 states. My recollection is that Clark was, in 1980, and he got to debate publicly. My understanding is that the reason only Bush and Gore are debating now is that for a third party candidate to be allowed to debate there has to be at least a theoretical chance that he/she could win enough electoral college votes to win the election. If that's true, shame on the party regulars for not getting their candidate on the ballot.
