I began watching this debate with an open mind---having judged local speaking contests.

Regarding eloquence, I felt neither candidate was eloquent.
Gore came off like a used car salesman hawking his favorite points---the 1% and the drugs for seniors. And, Bush showed the glimmerings of being a statesman---needing to truly pound home his success in Texas.

Appearances do count in debates. People are influenced by appearance. Gore looked very plastic and Bush looked a little boyish. Both did the one thing often recommended for male speakers---wearing a red tie to brighten the face.

Both Gore and Bush agree that Seniors should be taken care of with Social Security and affordable medicines.

Gore came across as a single issue candidate---or at least two single issues-----affordable "drugs" for Seniors and supporting Roe vs. Wade.

Neither candidate articulated imo the truly main question for Seniors which is also a question for all of us. That is-----a comprehensive look at the whole medical care system with the goal of eliminating dependency on "drugs", a dependency which is often fostered within the medical arena. This results in people being over-medicated, particularly our fragile and vulnerable Seniors.

This debate was a warm-up for Bush as he psyches out Gore and for Gore. The real tests will be at the Town Meeting and then the final debate.
