OT Gore had an edge overall but Bush did not humiliate himself. I think Bush did a good job not letting Gore take the Education issue for himself. And I heard some analysts criticize Bush for not raising Clinton as an issue. That's nonsense, it would have left Bush wide open for Gore to lecture Bush he is campaigning against him, not Clinton, etc. So I think not doing this was a smart move by the Bush camp.

But Bush did skate on very thin ice though through the foreign policy questions. Gore was far from perfect and his heavy sighing each time he felt Bush said something that was plain wrong was distracting indeed. But when Gore kept criticizing the numbers in Bush's plan, Bush lost points with his non-specific "phony numbers" and "fuzzy math" responses, and whoever gave him that lame 'Gore not only invented the internet but also the calculator' line ought to be demoted to the team gofer.

One score to Gore was near the end where he basically said he was the right guy to keep the economy moving. IMO even the most ardent Clinton-basher would agree that when your candidate can say "Are you better off than you were 4 (or 8) years ago?" you have the wind at your back, and why I think Gore will win.

I think the debate itself was hardly earth-shattering, and what the heck? Let Nader and Buchanan debate too.
