I live in a small town too. You're always running into someone or hearing or reading about someone you know directly or by association.

I also live in a new neighborhood with acred lots. The theme around here tends toward "horse ranchette" so most folks either have no fence or if they do it's the wood (or vinyl) post and plank type.

Our immediate neighbor put in black "wrought iron" in the front area and post and wire along the rest. Totally clashes with everything else around here. But it fits their personality as they have fenced-in dispositions. They're in their 30s or so and they're like crotchety seniors. I guess it's cool since otherwise they don't bother anyone and they will have one of the nicer yards once all their trees take hold. Actually goes counter to the CC&Rs but nobody really seems to care about them anyway.

Our other immediate neighbor actually got on our case one day about flying kites. They left a little note in our mailbox expressing their displeasure about it yet failed to explain why. I suspect it was their horse which they pasture near our mutual fence and which the kites hovered near sometimes. I turned over the paper and wrote a little reply essentially wishing they would go fly a kite as well.

That's the most substantial interaction we've had with those swell folks and probably will be for a while. Sad, but true. I once asked (before the "kite incident") the woman there if she would part with some of their horse and donkey poop (for our would-be garden) which I noticed piling up in some places and I got this kind of cold, no eye contact response about how they need it themselves. Yeah, right. Weird. Fuck 'em. I guess they have a fence to protect their shit too. There was NOTHING in the CC&Rs about "no assholes".

So far, the rest of the folks around here are OK.
Oh well, give your neighbors a chance. After all, they have money and toys. All mine have is a little manure and frigid dispositions.
