AccelGraphics AccelPRO 2000 If you spend a large portion of your life chained to an OpenGL application, the AccelPRO ($2,295) could give you back those evenings and weekends. Even though the board and driver we tested were pre-release versions, they outperformed every other board in the Viewperf tests, thanks to the board's Glint Delta preprocessor. However, the AccelPRO stumbled under 3D Studio MAX, mostly because its 4MB local buffer was too small to enable Glint hardware support. If you're a 3D Studio MAX jockey, you'll want to spring for the $3,120 8MB/8MB AccelPRO 2500 (4/4 and 4/8 versions are also available). AccelGraphics is working on a Heidi driver that will enable all of the board's features. The generic onboard VGA yields mediocre 2D performance.
In the 8MB/8MB configuration, the AccelPRO should make 3D Studio MAX seem responsive, but at a high price. You can't beat the 8MB/4MB board for raw OpenGL performance, though -- it's a nose ahead of Dynamic Pictures' V192 at about half the price. |
