Cooters, I'm just reading the press release, which says in effect that Hitachi and SanDisk are going to be producing flash memory using each other's patents, and notes as well that SanDisk gets a claim on some production from the Hitachi plant. There was a qualifier clause in the press release, which leads one to believe that SanDisk might have some key patents that it is NOT cross licensing, so that a SNDK unit might have some different characteristics from a Hitachi unit. But I think the thrust of the press release is clear: Both companies are producing flash memory units using each other's patents--a situation that eliminates the need for either to pay royalties to the other.
