Some tidbits on that cdma stock.....
From: Maurice Winn
Here is a report I received today from a trusted advisor: ============================================================ I heard Irwin speak at a Goldman Sachs conference yesterday in Manhattan. He delivered the same talk he gave a couple weeks ago when his laptop was stolen. The slides were posted on both the moderated and immoderate threads. The following seems notable from his address yesterday:
€ In answer to a question regarding 3G licensees, he stated that prior to the announced spin-off, potential licensees were procrastinating in the hope that they would be able to trade IPR and negotiate a lower royalty rate. Since the spin-off announcement, that incentive to procrastinate has been removed and there has been a notable movement toward signings, evidenced by several signings in the past few weeks. HE THEN SAID HE EXPECTS SOME NOTABLE SIGNINGS IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS. (I haven't seen this noted anywhere.)
€ In discussing Globalstar, HE SAID GLOBALSTAR WILL BE AROUND FOR A LONG TIME. (I haven't seen this specific statement noted anywhere.)
€ Slide 15 in his presentation is, as noted by someone on the threads, a bombshell. As explained by Irwin:
1. In the absence of data, CDMA1x provides nearly 50% more voice capacity than WCDMA. (I would add, 1x provides about 4 times the voice capacity of GSM.)
2. In the absence of voice, CDMA 1x/HDR provides more than 3 times as much data as WCDMA. (I would add, it provides about 8 times the data capacity of EDGE and about 20 times the data capacity of GPSR. I would also note that at any level of voice usage, the comparison is at least that good, and sometimes even better.)
The fund manager whom I accompanied was very impressed with that chart.
The present strength in the stock possibly reflects a growing acceptance that as Irwin has continually said, QCOM royalties will be the same regardless of the CDMA flavor. (Of course there are other factors as well.) But if that is so, the Paycek target price of $250 is going to become accepted before long because it was primarily based on the NPV of the royalty stream. ============================================================
In regard to Irwin having his notebook stolen, I imagine that will provide impetus to secure systems with HDR or other high-speed wireless connections to secure servers safely stashed away in cyberspace. Also, it might prompt strong encryption of data stored on notebooks [for fast access anytime anywhere] which can be accessed by getting a key from a secure server on instruction of an approved user who has their own password or Iris, or Fingerprint identification.
Is that a good idea Marty? You know about stuff like that.
