Don,

Perhaps inventions don't interest you personally but objectively speaking mankind thrives on invention.

Invention is original thought that shares something in common with the thinking of a plumber. Without ownership rights to thought as intellectual property the plumber will choose not to fix the toilet. It's payment for thought, without payment who will think? The plumber? I doubt it.
