KIRKLAND, Wash. (AP) - Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren has benched quarterback Jon Kitna in favor of Brock Huard for Sunday's game at Carolina.
``I place high demands on the offense, and our passing game hasn't been what we'd like,'' Holmgren said Wednesday. ``That's never one person. But clearly the quarterback is the focus, so we're going to try to get something going with Brock.
``I like Brock, and I've always liked his ability. He hasn't gotten a chance to play, so now we'll see.''
Huard, a second-year player from the University of Washington, will make his first NFL start. His only appearance of the season came in the opening 23-0 loss to Miami.
Kitna was 17-of-28 for 140 yards with one TD pass and an interception Monday night in the Seahawks' 24-17 loss at Kansas City. Seattle led 17-7 in the third quarter. The Seahawks are 2-3.
``It caught me off guard,'' Kitna said, adding he was ``as surprised as (you) can be with anything in this business. It's something that I just have to deal with and roll with.''
Kitna had a 64.9 quarterback rating after five weeks with four TD passes and eight interceptions. He has been sacked 19 times.
In Kansas City, he fumbled the snap from center Chris Gray three times, but recovered all three.
Kitna has started 19 consecutive games for the Seahawks. He led the team to the AFC West title last season.
``Do I feel any different? Not really,'' Huard said. ``I'm just coming out here and doing my job. It's a few more responsibilities and a few more reps. I've just got to get ready to play on Sunday.''
Huard took over for Kitna in the second half of the loss to Miami, going 4-of-9 for 30 yards.
During the exhibition season, Holmgren promoted Huard to be Kitna's backup and cut Glenn Foley, the team's No. 2 quarterback last season. |
