commitment and recognition of the critical importance of the solution side of the product line and his ability to build a value chain through alliances and interfaces.

Hmmm. What percentage of Oracle sales comes through VARs, if he is so hot at developing alliances and value chains? Consider lowly PRGS by comparison, the master of stealth marketing, who nevertheless get 70% of their revenue through the reseller channel. Now, just imagine what Oracle's revenue would be if their current revenue was only 30% of the total! PRGS may be invisible in most respects, but Gartner has them the leader in the "embedded" database market, i.e., databases sold as an intrinsic part of an application. They are the dollar leader, despite their overall license revenues being a tiny fraction of Oracle's.

To me, that sounds like someone succeeding *despite* having failed to exploit a major value chain.
