TIBX third quarter earnings exceed expectations

PALO ALTO, Calif., Sept 26 (Reuters) - Tibco Software Inc. (NasdaqNM:TIBX - news), a supplier of high-speed data distribution software, on Tuesday reported fiscal third-quarter earnings that surpassed Wall Street's expectations.

The company, whose real-time e-business software products are used by Web publishers, said it earned $16.4 million or seven cents per share in the latest quarter, excluding certain non-cash charges, compared with a loss of $1.9 million or two cents per share in the year-ago quarter.

The latest quarter's operating profit compared with the five cents per share consensus estimate of analysts surveyed by First Call/Thomson Financial, which compiles broker estimates.

Tibco said that including the unusual charges, it earned $6.9 million or three cents per diluted share in the latest quarter.

Revenues rose to $67.2 million from $24 million in the year-ago period.

Tibco is majority-owned by U.K.-based media company Reuters Group Plc (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: RTR.L)(NasdaqNM:RTRSY - news), following Tibco's initial public offering last June. Competitors include webMethods Inc. (NasdaqNM:WEBM - news) and Vitria Technology Inc. (NasdaqNM:VITR - news).

The company saw software licensing fees swell to $48.5 million in the third quarter from $13.2 million a year earlier.
