Korea Hyundai teams with Capstone on hybrid engine

SEOUL, Oct 5 (Reuters) - South Korea's Hyundai Motor said on Thursday it has teamed up with U.S. energy company Capstone Turbine Corp (NasdaqNM:CPST - news) to develop hybrid engines.

The country's largest carmaker said in a statement the first hybrid engine using Capstone's gas turbine generator would be installed and tested in the Santa Fe sport-utility vehicle (SUV) in the first half of 2001.

The hybrid engine could double fuel efficiency and cut exhaust emission to one-sixth that from normal combustion engines, Hyundai said.

Capstone will develop the turbine generator, while Hyundai will be responsible for the control units and assembly, it said.

The hybrid engine can use a variety of fuels, including liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and compressed natural gas, because it does not require an exhaust catalyser.

The application of the engine would be expanded to Hyundai's commercial vehicles from 2002, it said.

Shares of Hyundai Motor fell 150 won to close at 13,850. Capstone closed $9-1/4 weaker at $57 on Wednesday.
