SNC-Lavalin Group Inc.: Mozal Aluminum Smelter Inaugurated in Mozambique, SNC-Lavalin Completes World-Class Project Six Months Ahead of Schedule and Below Budget
MONTREAL, QUEBEC-- OCTOBER 5, 2000 - 09:33 EDT SNC-Lavalin was a proud participant in the recent inauguration of the CDN$1.9 billion Mozal aluminum smelter in Mozambique. The company, with its South African partner, provided the project management, engineering, procurement and construction management for the giant facility, located near Maputo. Mozal is the largest industrial project ever undertaken in the southern African country and was completed six months ahead of schedule and below budget.
The smelter is built on a 1.3 million square-metre site, equivalent to 340 football fields, and was designed for an initial annual production capacity of 250,000 tonnes of aluminum ingot, which can be expanded to 500,000 tonnes per year. First aluminum was produced in June, just 25 months after the start of the project.
Mozal is 47-per-cent-owned by United Kingdom-based Billiton plc. Other shareholders include the Government of Mozambique, the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa, and Mitsubishi Corporation of Japan.
