Thread- If you review message #5827 above, you'll see that Lucent was named one of six primary vendors for Project Pronto. Funny how I find very few references by either the vendors or SBC themselves, calling these substantial contracts, "Project Pronto," related. I guess they gave up on the title because some believe it's a misnomer. IMO, I'm not surprised it didn't rollout as smooth as projected. I'm still doubling every estimate I hear. -MikeM(From Florida)

Lucent Wins $1 Billion SBC Contract

SAN ANTONIO (Reuters) - SBC Communications Inc. (NYSE:SBC - news), the No. 2 U.S. local phone company, said on Thursday that Lucent Technologies Inc. (NYSE:LU - news) had won a contract, valued at more than $1 billion, to be SBC's main equipment supplier for its national network expansion.

The company said in a statement that Lucent, the world's biggest telecommunications equipment maker, would be the primary supplier of data, voice and access infrastructure technology for its the expansion.

The five-year deal is expected to be valued at more than $1 billion, the companies said in a joint statement. The contract covers SBC's nationwide entry into 30 markets.

When it completes the expansion, SBC will offer service in markets that reach 180 million people.
