The Governor is not an idiot. He is a man of character, which is more than I can say for his opponent. How do you deal with the hypocracy that he was a cokehead in his youth (and don't say it's unsubstantiated as he all but admitted it) and presides over a state with the most draconian drug laws in the Union?
