Sunny: Chuckle. As a "layman" myself I am not the best person to ask for an explanation. John G on the Qualcomm Coming into Buy Range thread who put this together is, and this discussion would probably best be carried out on that thread which would permit other Qualcomm'rs to chime in.

However, here goes for what it might be worth, my take:

Note: This is for new spectrum - repeat new spectrum - not current spectrum - and specifically how 10MHx could be used by various combinations.

2 WCDMA (5 MHX) Carriers

7 1x (1.25 MHz) Carriers

(The point is that 7 CDMA 1.25 carriers can fit in this space carrying CDMA 1x or HDR or a combination, while only 2 GSM plain or modified by GPRS or Edge or WCDMA can fit)

The most interesting result is that Qualcomm's 1x and HDR alone or in combination win hands down - and the surprise to me is that they win even against WCDMA - and win against GSM and its add ons easily (which I expected).

The race is for throughput.

Suggest that further conversation be on a Q thread, since it is technical beyone my ken.

Major Note: In the real world in current spectrum and therefore in the next couple of years, the competition is between GSM/GPRS vs 1x and HDR (1xEV), and there GSM/GPRS is a pitiful data race entry (especially for wireless data / internet connection) given that it is way behind the current installed CDMA base in Korea and Japan in data speed, let alone the upcoming HDR (1xEV) [especially the Samsung version].

Best.
