canuck-l - the spanish system makes more sense imho, a woman does not lose her paternal surname on marriage, she simply adds that of the husband [the second apellido] ... the kids receive both ... for example - Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz, Ruz was his mother's father's apellido paternal, Castro his father's father's [ad infinitum] surname ... still not entirely fair perhaps, as the maternal surnames last only two generations ... but what does it matter, you can call me anything, just don't call me late for supper.
