The fault-tolerant Tandem technology is tried and true...for example, much of the NYSE runs on Tandem networks. It is truly incredible that this kind of technology can be combined with the cost-effectiveness of the PC. This type of thing could finally lead to the total undoing of the mainframe. Specifically, I could see fault-tolerant SANs (System Area Networks) of servers becoming embedded in high-speed (Gigabit) Ethernet or ATM LANs -- in effect, pseudo-mainframes "built into" high-speed LANs, for far lower cost than equivalent mainframe systems.

...remember, fault-tolerance is probably the last remaining benefit mainframes have over PCs right now. Combining Tandem server technology with PCs blows away this last benefit.

...another key point, fault-tolerance is crtically important to Internet commerce -- financial transactions must be maintained with very high integrity and "journaling" (recoverability)...

From the article:
"Other major vendors are licensed by Tandem to incorporate ServerNet technology into their Windows NT Server-based systems."

My question:
Does anyone have details of the licensing agreement? When huge companies like Dayton Hudson migrate data to these multi-server networks, we might expect some fat licensing revenues...how much?
