FREMONT, Calif.-- Centillium Communications Inc. here today announced the acquisition of vEngines Inc., a supplier of voice-processing chips, for about $43 million in stock.

The deal gives Centillium some technology for the voice-enabled Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) market.

Santa Clara, Calif.-based vEngines develops high-density, voice-processing chips for use in gateways and remote-access servers, which provides both circuit-switched voice and data on the network.

"The acquisition of vEngines further extends Centillium's leadership in the voice-over-packet integrated circuit market," said Faraj Aalaei, chief executive of Centillium, a supplier of chip sets for DSL applications. "The acquisition of vEngines will accelerate the introduction of our next generation products that will allow us to sustain our market lead [in voice-enabled DSL applications]."
