You Think Irwin Jacobs Is Looking At Pdas Right Now?
Wednesday, September 27, 2000 08:04:43 PM - Phillips Business Information

Sep. 27, 2000 (Wireless Data News, Vol. 8, No. 20 via COMTEX) -- Opinion By John Sullivan

Well, like most of that select group of people for whom it holds any meaning at all, I can't resist a joke or two about the theft of Qualcomm [QCOM] CEO Irwin Jacobs' laptop at a conference in Irvine, Calif.

Much of the spin on this among the trade press is based on the conjecture that the theft was not a case of industrial espionage against Qualcomm. Laptop theft pundits (yes, apparently they exist) have been explaining that most laptop thefts are just opportunity crimes carried out by dumb punks who want something light and valuable they can sell for drugs.

Personally, I find it amusing that this wasn't just any trade show, but a meeting of the Society of American Business Editors and Writers. Never leave anything valuable lying around in a room full of journalists, especially trade journalists. They don't pay us very much, you know. I probably would have snagged his laptop if I'd been there and thought I could get away with it.(I have witnesses by the way, non-journalists, who will swear I wasn't even in California that day.)...
