Re: Since all software runs as well on Intel parts as
it does on AMD parts it makes little difference if dell
has one line of systems with AMD parts in it...

That's where you are missing the picture. It does make
a difference to corporate customers. This is the hardest
thing for people to comprehend. They think because
they can take an Intel machine and AMD machine home,
set them up side by side, load the same software and
get the same results... ergo, they're identical.

Wrong.

Key word: LEGACY support.

Talk to any IT manager about upgrades. How much work
does it take to replace an Intel based machine with an
AMD machine? Think drivers, peripherals, remote
manageability. 15 minutes to go from Intel to Intel
designed for minimal change to potentially hours of
reconfig and install for AMD/nameyourchipset machines.
Oh, it won't support our investment in these 5000 video
cards? Yes it will, you just need to load all these
new drivers on every new machine. There goes your
cost savings. Corp customers say no thanks. The
cost of a PC is about 10% of the total cost of
ownership the rest is supporting, upgrading,
training and maintaining.

Look at what markets IBM and CPQ are selling their AMD
machines into today.
