WASHINGTON, D.C. (October 3, 2000) – Taking a strong stand against drunk driving, Congress today voted to pass a new national drunk driving limit of .08 percent blood alcohol content (BAC) with the strong support of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and other leading highway safety, health, medical, law enforcement, and insurance groups. The provision was enacted by the Senate-House conferees, with the strong backing of President Clinton, as part of the Federal Transportation Appropriations legislation. The bill is expected to go the Senate and House floor for final passage later this week. The legislation requires the states to pass .08 “per se intoxication” laws or lose a portion of their annual federal highway funding. ...
