This highlighted NEC quote struck me as important to us Wind shareholders:

TOKYO & ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 6, 2000--NEC
Corporation (NEC) (Nasdaq:NIPNY) (FTSE:6701q.l) (TYSE:6701) and Wind
River Systems, Inc (Nasdaq:WIND) today announced that NEC has become a
value-added reseller of Wind River products by integrating NEC's
MIPS-based network controllers with Wind River's market share-leading
embedded software.
Through this agreement, Wind River and NEC customers can quickly
begin developing application software and middleware, thereby reducing
time to market for xDSL applications including small office/home
office (SoHo) routers, residential gateways and set-top boxes.
Under the terms of the agreement, NEC will bundle its MIPS-based
network controllers, including the uPD98501 and future derivatives,
with Wind River's Tornado(R) development environment and
VxWorks(R)/pSOSYTEM(R) real-time operating system and a target license
for operating systems. These will be provided under a 60-day
evaluation copy of the Wind River Tornado II development environment.
"VxWorks is the leading operating system choice among designers of
network applications and we are pleased to be able to offer our
worldwide customers this best-in-class software," said Kyuichi
Hareyama, general manager of 2nd System LSI Division, NEC Corporation.

"With incredibly stringent market windows for communications
applications, time-to-market is everything. Working directly with us,
xDSL designers can now obtain a fully integrated hardware/software
solution to bring their products to market quickly."
"With this agreement, NEC Electronics will be providing a proven
Hardware/Software platform to our focus markets in North America. Our
customers can be assured of a best-of-breed, highly-integrated, and
well-supported solution based on the latest technologies of Wind River
and NEC," said Chung Ho, assistant general manager, Communication
Strategic Business Unit at NEC Electronics, Inc.
"Wind River is committed to providing complete integrated
technology solutions so our customers can get to market faster with
highly next-generation smart devices, including xDSL applications,"
said Curt Schacker, vice president of marketing and corporate
development at Wind River. "Wind River's breadth and depth of embedded
software and services expertise, combined with horsepower of NEC's
robust network controllers, will provide an ideal solution for
designers addressing the small office and home networking arena."

Pricing and Availability

Aimed at meeting the requirements for xDSL equipment in the SoHo
and consumer market, the uPD98501 bundled with Wind River RTOS
integration is available now at $25 each in 10K quantities. Pricing
and availability are subject to change.
