"every Zip disk has a unique serial number" right you are. and it's easily viewable. it's where we go to set the drive sleep. with the disk inserted, open explorer. right-click your removable disk drive and choose properties. the 'disk' tab will give you the serial number. (and btw, this number did NOT coincide with the error message request number.) the diagnostics tab offers a test, but i've always been a bit skeptical about the integrity of that <g3>. :) mark
