SBC DSL update:

In summary, my opinion is that SBC options via PacBell in California sucks! I wish I could be more positive.

Options:
1. $39.95 for dynamic IP address with PacBell's proprietary software to link up and supply IP address.
2. $59.59 for 5 static IP addresses.

NOTE: There is NO cheap option for ONE static IP address! Why NOT!

My sister and kids earlier this year got one IP address that they share over several machines via a router and firewall (SonicWall). They do NOT want to leave a computer on full time.

The problem came to light yesterday when I was trying to fix a friends DSL connection. They had an Alcatel modem, that didn't work, so they switched to a WSTL modem which also worked for a couple of days. WON'T connect! Tech support has tried several time and they've spent hours on the telephone. When you try to get and IP address and sync up with the system it just times out!

I will NOT mess with some proprietary software. It's got too many TCP/IP drivers loaded but I don't know that does what and I was HOPING they could just be given a static IP address so I could go back and setup they're system. BUT, I am SURE they will NOT upgrade to the $60 level.

The range of support options is MUCH larger if they just setup they're system with static IP's.

I just got off the phone with SBC and told them the same as I have stated here.

I'd guess they're using dynamic IP's because they can hook up more people than with Static IP's. BUT, if that's the case, how do I KNOW that the only reason my friend's maching can't log on to the system with because there aren't an more available IP address.

Oh well, SBC is expanding on installs but I'd guess there'll be more failures.

I've got PacBell at my office and Covad at home. Haven't had any previous problems debugging the systems. Used both an Alcatel router and a WSTL modem at work.

later, leroyt
