Another company bucking the overall negative trend in the telecoms
sector was Marconi, the telecommunications equipment maker, after it
announced plans to list its shares on Nasdaq from Oct. 16. Analysts said
the listing should give Marconi a higher profile with U.S. investors as it
seeks to increase its share of the telecoms equipment market. The move
also increases the likelihood of further acquisitions, especially in the
U.S.
Marconi also released solid sales figures ahead of a roadshow in the
U.S.
next week. It said orders rose to 3.3 billion sterling in the six months
to Sept. 30, up 22% from 2.7 billion sterling last year.
Marconi rallied over 6% in early trading, although it slipped back to
end the day 1.1% higher.
But most other telecoms stocks were on the defensive, including
industry heavyweight Vodafone. Vodafone shares fell 4% to give up much of
Thursday's strong gain, as dealers said there appeared to be some
switching out of Vodafone into BT. He said Cable & Wireless suffered the
same fate, and its shares ended 2.9% lower.
The FTSE-350 index of telecoms stocks ended the day 1.7% lower.
