Cosmic.. I use the term "liberal" as a counterweight against pragmatic and reality based individuals constantly being demonized as conservatives.
After all, let's face some facts here... It has been the democratic party that constantly plays the race card, stirs up class warfare, demagogues about "big oil", or the great rightwing conspiracy.
Personally, I'm pretty sick of this crap. I'm tired of seeing the structure of this great country subverted by governmental hand-outs and political pandering and pork-barreling in order to capture votes.
My father grew up dirt poor, one of 14 children on a strawberry farm in Arkansas. At 17 he fled the grip of a domineering father and joined the Navy getting tossed and thrown around the ocean blue on an LST. By the time he was 27, he was the head of his own construction firm, with some 50 employees, 1/2 of which were union.
Now I didn't see the government out there throwing money towards poor people like him, but he sure as hell saw a lot of it being thrown at people who were better off than we were. He'd go and repair govt housing projects where people would tear holes into walls between adjoining apts, and roast pigs in the bathtubs.
So here was my father, a self-made man, fulfilling a contract to repair low-rent apartments for people had been given subsidized housing and had abused that welfare because they didn't have a personal stake or ownership in their dwelling.
But I'll tell you what. I betcha those people voted democratic because it was in their best interest to do so (gotta keep that govt money coming in the door). And more to the point, it points out that it isn't only non-whites who have a history of being destitute and needing a bit of assistance. My father could have used some of that when he left home. I'm sure he would have rather gone to college than joining the navy.
The Clinton/Gore administration has been one of the more exhuberant practitioners of the politics of division. Racism is a learned behavior and it exists in both directions. It is also metaphorically very similar to a pile of sh*t, in that the more you stir it, the more it stinks. And Clinton/Gore have been stirring the pile for 8 years trying to make conservatives feel guilt that they have no requirement to bear.
This clearly has to stop before we all start believing the ideological propaganda claiming every white man is a cracka' or every minority a downtrodden, misunderstood "homie".
Long before any black man stepped out of slavery and into the ghettoes, the slums were inhabited by Poles, Slavs, Itailians/Sicilians, Jews, and most notably, the Irish. Look at the history of the Irish exodus during the early 1800s and see how miserable their lives were, and where they stood on the social scale.
Look at how miserably the Chinese were treated, and how many lives were sacrificed to build the infrastructure of this nation... How much is owed to these two peoples as compensation for their indentured servitude?
Any conservative worth his salt doesn't give a crap what color of skin you have, but rather what you have accomplished without resorting to government handouts and liberal pandering in exchange for your votes.
They judge people on how they themselves are treated and judged. They will do anything in the world to help those who are endeavoring to help themselves, while disdaining those who seek to burden us with guilt for their own lack of self-respect and motivation.
Call me cruel, but outside of not being willing to let people starve, I don't have a lot of sympathy for those who knowingly seek to steal and destroy that which others have worked to obtain.
Giving blanket voting pardons to criminals who have taken rather than given is a recipe for social self-destruction and further encouragement for others to infringe on the rights of law abiding people.
