Because ethanol is an even better gasoline oxygenator than MTBE and doesn't have the lethal after effects on the environment that the Gore backed MTBE has. It also reduces the amount of oil used for gas by 10%. Ethanol also is a renewable energy source and in colder climates stops winter gas line freeze ups. Using ethanol also helps support corn prices and reduces government welfare to farmers.
