Most companies go up the value chain in search of better margins for their products. SSTI technology gives them a cost advantage which makes their competitors leave their space. Having watched the disk drive industry for several years I had the exact same impression of Western Digital's stock as I do with Silicon Storage. At one time WDC had explosive revenue and earnings growth and they were making good money by milking their thin film drives. The PE was very low and it looked like a bargain. Analysts were pounding the table about future growth and then the bottom fell out. This seems like a better story because of the IP but I am reluctant to jump in.
