Santa Clara, California, Oct. 6 (Bloomberg) -- Extreme Networks Inc., a maker of computer-networking equipment, is seeking to quintuple the number of shares it can issue after the stock more than doubled and split 2-for-1 this year.

The company is asking shareholders to approve increasing the number of authorized shares to 750 million from 150 million, the company said in a preliminary proxy statement filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Extreme's annual shareholder meeting is scheduled for Nov. 21, the filing said.

Extreme said it wants to have the shares available for acquisitions, equity financings, stock splits and other purposes. The split in August was its first since an initial public offering in April 1999. The Santa Clara, California-based company had about 109.9 million shares outstanding as of Sept. 30.

Extreme shares fell 25 cents to $99.81 on the Nasdaq Stock Market.
