I think the eco-system would do fine without us, Homo sapiens. We seem to be it’s biggest problem right now.

The taxonomists who named the species were possibly biased but sapient means expressing great sagacity or discernment. Essentially the original taxonomist are claiming Homo sapiens’s unique characteristic as a species is intelligence or awareness. I hope these guys are correct. I don’t think I’ll have to worry too much about it but future generations may have a problem if they were wrong.

Our Judeo-Christian heritage leads us to believe that we are above nature (above the “eco-system”). Mankind created in the image of God holds sway over the lesser creatures, blah…blah…blah.

In my opinion we are part of nature. Just like the ants that build complex ant colonies on the African savanna, we are builders. Producing nylon and plastic or drilling for oil is as natural for us as worms producing silk, if you assume we are part of nature.

Nothing mankind does or produces is unnatural. Man as part of the eco-system, building a SUN E Server is only natural (trying to be on topic). It’s also natural that we would debate and modify our behavior toward the rest of the eco-system eliminating our behaviors that threaten our own existence. I hope we are successful.

The fossil record provides plenty of evidence of species that were not.
