WASHINGTON - Aides to Joe Lieberman denied yesterday he tried to evict a mother of five who claimed she lost her job and couldn't pay rent after falling on a faulty staircase.
But Republicans tagged the Gore-Lieberman team "the slumlord ticket" - citing the recent flap over a rundown Tennessee shack owned by Vice President Al Gore, whose tenants were threatened with eviction after they complained about leaking sewage.

Monica Beach, 58, was renting a Stamford, Conn., apartment from the $48 million estate of Lieberman's uncle when she allegedly tripped on an icy rear staircase with a broken railing, hurt her back and lost her job as a hotel linen-room attendant.

In 1997, after Beach failed to pay rent for almost a year, the estate - which Lieberman oversees as executor - went to court to evict her.

But it wasn't until she sued Lieberman over her injuries - and her plight made headlines - that the vice-presidential hopeful stepped in.

Lieberman spokesman Dan Gerstein said once Lieberman was made aware of the dispute, "he did play a role in preventing her from being evicted."

Since then, Beach has been allowed to stay in the apartment, rent-free, pending the outcome of her lawsuit.
