Article...CNN: Gore's Panel Bigger in Debate

NEW YORK (AP) - CNN's split-screen images during this week's presidential debate gave Vice President Al Gore a slightly bigger portion of the screen than Gov. George W. Bush, the network acknowledged Friday.

Like other networks covering the face-off, CNN mostly gave Bush and Gore equal treatment. But the network said that, during intermittent use of a split-screen image to display both candidates simultaneously, it mistakenly made Gore's panel about 6 percent larger than Bush's.

``It was certainly unintentional,'' CNN spokeswoman Sue Binford said. ``Technicians made the adjustments they had to make, and it won't happen again.''

The split-screen format, with Gore seen on the left at his lectern and Bush on the right, was used during about 13 minutes of the 95-minute debate.

A former TV-station engineer detected the difference and e-mailed an alert to Bush headquarters, the New York Post reported.

Binford called the disparity ``a technical glitch'' that went unnoticed during airtime at the network. It drew no complaints from viewers, she added. An estimated 3.2 million people watched the debate on CNN.
