This from the Last Mile thread from MikeM54321 who posts here too occasionally. Note the different reason given for Telco slowdown.

I have read several articles while on vacation and also an excellent SSB report on Telcos that absolutely dispute current published reasons given for this slowdown (too much fiber already in the ground) a "glut" of overcapacity, etc.).

Unfortunately, I can not post the SSB report because of copyright restrictions, but anyone who can get their hands on the 9/20/2000 SSB report titled "Telecommunications Services Sentiment belies LT Industry Growth; Strongly reiterate Bullish stance" should read it.

I will post a couple of sentences from the report though".

"The reason we believe that the sector is under pressure and continues to be under pressure is that we believe other analysts are raising issues that are not new - other than the facts that the stocks are down a lot."

Then after a few pages of explanation:

"Thus, we believe that the notion of bandwidth glut is preposterous."

and near the end:

"At a time like this, when the valuations are absurdly low, and there is huge capitulation on Wall Street, we thought it was a good idea to remind people where we stand."
