Primarily, low voter participation, which is how lots of our politicians get elected. All any politician has to do is secure the respective party base, pick two or three popular issues, milk your big money connections and, if you come from a well-known or prominent family, milk those connections and, yup, the politician gets elected over and over and over again. Ain't that the way it usually goes, Frank? It's no different in Texas where Bush twice got elected governor.
In Bush's case, given he defeated former governor Ann Richards, he had mo-mo on his side. His strong showing, together with low turnout, probably also had to do with running against a weaker, less organized opponent. It's also possible he got a boost due to a whisper campaign highlighting his presidential timber possibility. But, man, have they been dancin' 'round the wrong tree--LOL!
You know, given the dismal turnout we have in our elections, sometimes you really got to wonder about America, a land which prides itself on freedom. Given how money is used as such a controlling force in our nation, I sometimes wonder if the best way to enslave people is to simply make 'em think they are free. Yes, Frank, television marketing does wonders, even in campaigns in Texas. |
