As a life-long hiker and outdoors enthusiast, I don't see this as a common problem in most areas. The only thing most people have to fear is a hostile raccoon or angry 'possum. THATs what passes for wildlife in most cities which is where most people live.

When I was in school I worked with a guy who did oil geology in Alaska. They issued you a .357 side-arm when you go to the field. It wasn't out of bravado but due to bears. Big 'uns.

But to hold that this even ranks with lightning is absurd in California. Even in parts of Washington state which is considerably wilder than most other places, it is an extremely rare occurance when people have become prey.

There was a 90 lb female runner who was eaten by a mountain lion in the Sierra Foothills maybe 5 years ago. That was the last one in a state of 33 million people.
