I've never understood why there ever needed to be a tax increase. All this stuff is supposed to scale. Where's my economy of scale? Our economy has grown, but the costs have not kept track. The reason? People are no longer to work at an indigent level described in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Everyone expects a better wage, but on a global scale, our wages can't keep pace. There is a limit to the scalability of government and the U.S.government may be an example.

While many upper middle class people have done better in the last 20 years, the disparity between rich and poor has gotten worse. Despite what many people consider a confiscatory tax rate for professionals (most of "us"), there has been an acceleration of financial disparity.

If this persists we will be moving toward a feudal existence where more and more of us have to live behind gates.
