Special report on EMC in this week's INFORMATIONWEEK magazine: "EMC Shores Up Its Offense" Here are some clips, sorry about any typos:
Whether you talk to Julius the janitor or the top executives, they all convey the same message, says Dataquest analyst Roger Cox. That message: EMC is a results-driven execution machine, totally focused on its core competency.
It's investing a total of $2.5 billion in research and development and interoperability testing this year and next, with most of those dollars going into software development.
I've never seen a company as good at execution as EMC, says Jack Scott, a managing partner with the Evaluator Group, a market-research firm that specializes in storage: EMC excels at customer service, sales, engineering - you name it. I've very bullish on the management team.
EMC's competitors have other products and market pressures outside of storage, says Ruettgers, who sees that as a weakness. We believe a company can only do a couple of things well, and that's why we're totally focused on storage.
EMC has a tougher battle in the network attached storage market. Tucci ways the company is mounting a focused attach on this sector and hopes to dominate it soon.
Tucci…This is a results-driven company: Everybody has quarterly goals and excuses aren’t tolerated. That pretty much fits my personality and workstyle.
Tucci….We've just begun to realize our growth potential and growing a business is the best challenge an executive can have in his career.
Tucci…..We're absolutely maniacal about meeting and exceeding our customer's needs.
One of Tucci's most immediate goals in coming months is to hire 6,500 Type A personalities. |
