NETWORK APPLIANCE: Video on demand - Five times faster
OCT 9, 2000, M2 Communications - Network Appliance is launching a suite of new products and software tomorrow that overcome Internet low-bandwidth problems to deliver streaming media and video-on-demand.

NetCache 5.0 software eliminates network and server bottlenecks by delivering live Webcast and on-demand streams from the edge of the network. It breaks the performance barrier for live streaming by five times the performance of existing solutions.

NetCache 5.0 software also integrates iCAP, the open protocol that tailors the content delivered to suit the requesting technology, such as wireless and handheld devices. It also incorporates virus scanning of all documents before delivery and allows tailored advert insertion.

New hardware

The company is also launching two new high-performance content delivery platforms: the NetCache C6100 and C1105. The C6100 is Now NetApp's top-of-the range cache, offering OC12-level streaming performance, multi-terabyte capacity, high reliability, and exceptional scalability. It also incorporates unique stream splitting technology that can deliver up to 3,000 streams from a single input.

C6100 features include:

Reliability Greater than 99.99% Scalability Over 2 Terabytes Performance Over 180Mbps (HTTP) Video-on-demand streaming Over 400Mbps Broadcast streaming Over 500Mbps

The low-profile C1105, has been designed for remote/branch offices and ISP/telco remote POPs. It is suitable for edge deployments around the globe, and offers industry-leading rack density as well as extremely attractive price/performance ratios.

C1100 features include:

Storage capacity of 72GB 1U rack mount density Video on demand streaming greater than 70Mbps Broadcast streaming greater than 180Mbps

Together, these platforms provide a solid foundation to scale the IT infrastructures required by CDNs, geographically distributed enterprises, and service providers alike, and firmly establishes Network Appliance as the performance leader in streaming media applications.

Content management made easy Network Appliance is also launching two new software offerings ContentDirector and ContentReporter. These provide an easy-to-use management tool for policy-based content distribution and usage reporting. They offer single-point control of globally distributed content, which substantially reduces system administration and IT staff burdens and allow IT managers to deploy critical resources to other tasks.

ContentDirector distributes and manages content across all Network Appliance products. ContentReporter enables easy integration into standard billing platforms for content delivery networks (CDNs) and service providers for new revenue-generating services. Combined, these solutions deliver powerful tracking and content distribution, enabling the next generation of enterprise applications and CDNs and empowering users with rapid, reliable content access.

All these products are being launched at the Streaming Media 2000 show at Earls' Court running tomorrow and Wednesday. A press conference is being given on Wednesday afternoon to mark the official launch, but NetApp spokespeople can be fielded today.
